When emergencies strike, CERT volunteers are ready to swing into action as support for First Responders. In our mountain communities, the first and foremost threat is fire. However, earthquakes pose an even greater danger by potentially cutting off road access into the mountain areas. Downed bridges could easily leave mountain residents stranded for weeks and even months. Rotary not only supports CERT financially, but supports it emotionally as well. Rotary recognizes the need for personal and community preparedness. As usual, when volunteers are needed, you’ll find Rotarians among the first to step forward.
Rotary is a proud financial partner in the support of Lake Arrowhead CERT

CERT, which stands for Community Emergency Response Team was first formed in the Los Angeles area as a direct response to the 1987 Whittier-Narrows earthquake. Since that time, CERT has grown to be a national organization with chapters in all 50 states.
In the event of an emergency, it is highly probable that Police, Fire, and medical professionals will be overwhelmed. CERT members stand ready to assist in those areas that will allow First Responders to then move on and be more effective. CERT members are not fire fighters or sworn police officers. They are merely volunteers who see the need to prepare for the care of their own families, but who also see a need to help others prepare.
All CERT members go through a basic 21-hour course to understand how to administer minor first aid, to assist in Search & Rescue efforts, and in basic triage screening. Most CERT members move on to take more advanced training in CPR and more advanced first aid, so that they can be better prepared for major events. Also, many CERT members have HAM licenses to assist with communication efforts in the event of a major disaster.
